Research
and Policy analysis

We offer consultancy services and conduct own research on various development-related topics. By applying cutting-edge research methods, we build scientific evidence on a number of development issues, with an ultimate goal of facilitating evidence-based policy processes. Our approach is unique in a sense that we identify development issues in Rwanda and use available secondary data and/or collect primary data to produce evidence-based policy recommendations. This demand-driven approach ensures the utilization of our research products in policy processes.

Value chain
analysis

We conduct value chain analysis with the aim of not only understanding the way value chains for major crops are organized or function but also to identify factors that drive their effective performance as well as bottlenecks and how they can be addressed based on evidence. We have so far conducted value chain analysis studies to understand stages along which jobs can be created and the skills gaps that need to be addressed as part of the National Skills Development and Employment Promotion Strategy of Rwanda. We have also undertaken value chain analysis with a gender lens, trying to identify opportunities for women to increase their participation in upstream stages of the value chain and add value to their operations especially through small-scale agro-processing.

Monitoring
and evaluation

We help our clients establish credible monitoring and evaluation systems by setting good indicators, monitoring and evaluating project/program implementation and evaluating impact based on the set indicators. Our clients are provided with international M&E standards which are then adapted not only to the local (Rwandan) context but also to their organizational needs and capabilities. To ensure sustainability and ownership of M&E systems, we also train our clients in how to build, maintain and update their own M&E systems.

Training in academic writing skills

Writing good quality academic and policy research papers and policy briefs is a skill that is acquired and accumulated over time. Whether the ultimate goal is a journal publication or an impactful policy research paper, MRC is devoted to developing research individual and institutional research capacity.
